Ways to Navigate Anxiety in Healthy Ways During Uncertain Times
We all experience anxiety to some degree. In today’s world, there are countless events happening that create uncertainty, worry, and fears of something awful, or another awful thing, happening around the corner. With so many things out of our control, many turn to news outlets and social media in an attempt to regain some sense of control by staying informed. However, this often creates a loop—constantly checking our phones or turning on the news only to increase anxiety when we step away. While being informed is important, it’s equally vital to prioritize your mental health. Here are a few coping strategies to help reduce anxiety symptoms.
Exercise Regularly
-Physical activity releases endorphins, which help improve mood. The physical activity can range from aerobic exercises (walking, running, swimming, dancing, etc) to weight lifting.
Practice Mindfulness and Meditation
-Engaging in breathing exercises or other mindfulness meditations, such as ones found on mindfulness apps and youtube, can help try and reduce racing thoughts and bring the mind to the present moment.
Connect with Support
- Talking to trusted friends, family, or a therapist can provide emotional support. Get connected to groups around you that share the same message/ cause/ values/ beliefs. Utilizing support to share your feelings can make you feel less alone.
Limit Social Media Consumption
-Constant exposure to distressing news or comparisons on social media can increase anxiety. Take breaks or set limits on your social media use. You can set time restrictions on your social media apps to help you with your consumption.
Limit Caffeine and Sugar
-High levels of caffeine and sugar can amplify anxiety symptoms. Try and limit your consumption to see if it helps with reducing your anxiety symptoms.
Practice Self Compassion
-Be gentle with yourself when feeling anxious. Remind yourself that it’s okay, and common, to feel this way and that you’re doing the best you can in the moment.
Seek Professional Help
-If anxiety becomes overwhelming, seeking therapy to help you learn tools and strategies to better manage your anxiety.
